CNC Turning Parts

Hard Anodized CNC Turned Aluminum Prototype Parts

These are CNC turned aluminum prototype and production parts finished with hard anodizing, also called Type III anodizing, for a thick, wear-resistant surface. Typical parts include pistons, rollers, shafts, bushings and guides. Critical features are held to about ±0.01 mm, and every part is inspected. They suit engineers who need aluminum parts that resist wear and abrasion.

Manufacturing

How we make this part

Process, material options and inspection for hard anodized cnc turned aluminum prototype parts.

Hard anodizing is carried out at lower temperatures and higher current density than standard anodizing, producing a dense oxide layer typically around 25–50 µm. About half grows outward and half penetrates into the base metal, so we machine turned diameters with an allowance and confirm final size after coating. Sharp edges are radiused because thick anodize can crack on sharp corners.

6061-T6 is the most common alloy for hard anodizing. 7075-T6 also hard anodizes well and gives higher strength. Hard anodize color is naturally gray to dark bronze; it can be dyed black but not in bright colors. Other finishes such as painting, powder coating, plating and polishing are available when wear resistance is not the main goal.

Coating thickness is checked on samples, final diameters are measured after anodizing, and every part receives 100 % inspection of critical dimensions. Typical uses include pneumatic pistons, guide rollers, linear bushings, valve components, robotic actuator parts and sliding wear components in automation equipment. Inspection reports and material certificates are available on request.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does hard anodizing change part size?

A hard anodize layer of about 50 µm grows roughly 25 µm outward per surface, so a diameter increases by about 50 µm. We machine with this allowance so the final part meets the drawing, and we measure critical diameters after coating.

Can hard anodizing be done in colors?

Hard anodize is naturally gray to dark bronze, depending on alloy and thickness. It can be dyed black or dark colors, but bright colors are not practical. If color is important, Type II anodizing or another finish may be better.

How do I get a quote for hard anodized cnc turned aluminum prototype parts?

Send a 3D model (STEP or IGES) and a 2D drawing with tolerances, material, finish and quantity through the quote form or by email. An engineer replies within 24 hours on business days with price, lead time and any DFM suggestions.
