Swiss-Type CNC Turned Stainless Steel Micro Pins
These are small precision pins, shafts, needles and turned details produced in the Swiss-type style from 303, 304, 316 or 17-4PH stainless steel. A guide bushing supports the bar right at the cut, so slender parts hold diameters down to ±0.01 mm. They suit medical device, electronics and instrumentation makers needing tiny stainless components in volume.

How we make this part
Process, material options and inspection for swiss-type cnc turned stainless steel micro pins.
In Swiss-type style turning, the bar moves through a guide bushing while the tool stays close to the support point. That keeps deflection low on long, thin parts that would whip on a conventional lathe. Front and back operations, cross drilling and slotting are done before cut-off, so parts drop complete. Bar feeders allow long unattended runs, which keeps unit costs down on volume orders.
303 stainless contains sulfur for better chip breaking and is the easiest grade to Swiss-turn; it has slightly lower corrosion resistance. 304 and 316 are tougher to machine but better for wet or body-contact environments. 17-4PH can be precipitation hardened after machining for high strength. Pins are usually passivated, and can be polished or electropolished for smoother surfaces.
Diameters are checked with micrometers or laser micrometers, lengths with height gauges, and small features on optical comparators. Critical dimensions are 100% inspected, and material certificates are available. Typical uses include hinge pins for precision instruments and optics, sensor probes, medical device shafts, connector pins, watch components and small gear arbors.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which stainless grade is best for small turned pins?
303 is the easiest to machine and the cheapest choice for indoor, dry applications. Choose 304 or 316 when corrosion resistance or body contact matters, and 17-4PH when the pin needs high hardness or strength after heat treatment.
What length-to-diameter ratio can Swiss-type turning handle?
Because the bar is supported at the guide bushing, Swiss-type style turning can handle parts many times longer than their diameter, far beyond what a standard lathe manages. Exact limits depend on material and tolerance; send your drawing and we will confirm feasibility.
How do I get a quote for swiss-type cnc turned stainless steel micro pins?
Send a 3D model (STEP or IGES) and a 2D drawing with tolerances, material, finish and quantity through the quote form or by email. An engineer replies within 24 hours on business days with price, lead time and any DFM suggestions.
