5-Axis CNC Milled Aluminum Robot Joint Housing

These are robot joint housings, arm links and gearbox mounting flanges 5-axis CNC milled from aluminum. They hold harmonic or planetary reducers, bearings and motors, so bore concentricity and flange flatness are critical. They are made for robotics companies, cobot developers and automation integrators building arms, grippers and exoskeleton joints in prototype and production quantities.

How we make this part

Process, material options and inspection for 5-axis cnc milled aluminum robot joint housing.

Joint housings have bores on two or more axes and curved outer surfaces, so 5-axis machining cuts them in one or two setups. Reducer and bearing bores are finish bored in the same setup as their mounting flange, keeping perpendicularity and concentricity tight. Thin walls between motor and reducer are finished last, and outer contours are cut with ball end mills for a smooth surface.

6061-T6 is the common choice for joint housings because it balances strength, weight and cost; 7075-T6 is used for highly loaded links. Black or clear anodizing protects the surface; hard anodizing improves wear at seal surfaces. Bearing bores may be left bare or sized for anodize growth. Steel inserts can provide durable threads in frequently serviced joints.

Bore concentricity, flange flatness and hole patterns are measured with CMM on first articles and checked on critical dimensions for each part. Inspection reports can accompany every batch. Typical parts include cobot joint housings, robot arm links, end-effector flanges, wrist joints, gripper bodies and exoskeleton joint frames, supplied as single prototypes or matched production sets.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What tolerances do robot joint bearing bores need?

Bearing and reducer manufacturers usually specify housing fits such as H7 or J7, with concentricity and perpendicularity often in the 0.01–0.02 mm range. We machine critical bores and their flanges in one setup and verify them with CMM. Include the reducer maker's recommendations on the drawing.

Can you machine robot housings in small batches?

Yes. Robot developers often order 1–10 sets for prototypes, then scale up. Five-axis machining avoids custom fixtures in the early stage, and once the design is stable we can add dedicated fixtures to reduce unit cost for larger runs.

How do I get a quote for 5-axis cnc milled aluminum robot joint housing?

Send a 3D model (STEP or IGES) and a 2D drawing with tolerances, material, finish and quantity through the quote form or by email. An engineer replies within 24 hours on business days with price, lead time and any DFM suggestions.
