Manufacturing

How we make this part

Process, material options and inspection for cnc turned anodized aluminum flashlight body.

The tube is turned from bar or drawn tube, with the battery bore bored to size and threads at both ends cut on the same axis so the head and tail align. Knurling is cut or formed on the lathe, while flats, clip slots and anti-roll features are milled with live tooling. Heads with cooling fins are turned with grooving tools, and the LED shelf is faced for flat contact with the board.

Type III hard anodize, typically 25–75 µm, is the standard for rugged lights because it resists drops, scratches and abrasion. Type II gives more color options. Anodizing insulates, so thread ends and contact faces are left bare or machined after coating where electrical conduction through the body is required. Stainless or titanium bezels can be added for a premium look and impact resistance.

Threads are gauged and test-fitted head to tail, O-ring grooves measured, and the assembled body checked for smooth rotation. Water-resistance testing of assembled samples can be done to your procedure. Every cosmetic part is visually inspected after anodizing. Typical uses include tactical lights, EDC flashlights, dive torches, bike lights and work lamps.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why are flashlight threads left unanodized?

Many flashlights use the aluminum body as the electrical return path between the battery and the head. Anodizing is an insulator, so the contact threads or faces are masked or machined bare after coating. Some designs use bare threads at the tail for a lock-out feature.

Hard anodize or color anodize for a flashlight?

Type III hard anodize is tougher and more scratch-resistant, which is why most rugged lights use it, usually in dark gray or black. Type II supports bright colors such as red, blue or green but wears faster. Choose based on use: tactical and work lights favor hard anodize.
