Precision CNC Machined Parts

Turn-Mill CNC Aluminum and Stainless Steel Shaft Parts

These are custom shafts, pins and stepped spindles produced on CNC turn-mill centers from 6061/7075 aluminum or 303/304/316 stainless steel. One setup turns the diameters and mills flats, keyways or cross holes, holding critical fits down to ±0.01 mm. They suit OEMs building drives, fixtures and motion assemblies from one prototype to mid-volume runs.

Manufacturing

How we make this part

Process, material options and inspection for turn-mill cnc aluminum and stainless steel shaft parts.

Shaft-type parts are produced on turn-mill lathes with live tooling, so diameters, shoulders, threads, flats and radial holes are finished in a single clamping. Removing the second setup is what keeps runout and concentricity tight between bearing seats. For long, slender shafts we support the work with a tailstock or steady rest and finish-turn bearing journals last, after the heavier milling, to keep deflection out of the final size.

Aluminum 6061-T6 is the default for light-duty shafts and spacers: it cuts fast and takes Type II anodizing (typically 5–25 µm) for color and corrosion protection. Where the shaft carries real torque or sees moisture, 303 stainless machines more freely, while 304 and 316 resist corrosion better at slightly higher cost. Stainless parts are usually passivated or polished; powder coating is reserved for non-fit surfaces because it adds thickness.

Every first article is measured against the drawing before the batch runs. Diameters are checked with micrometers and air or bore gauges, threads with go/no-go gauges, and runout on V-blocks with a dial indicator; CMM covers positional features. Critical dimensions get 100% inspection before shipment. Typical uses include drive shafts in automation modules, hinge pins, roller axles and pump spindles.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which material should I choose for a shaft, aluminum or stainless steel?

Choose stainless steel when the shaft carries significant torque, runs in bearings long term or sees moisture; 303 machines easily, 316 gives the best corrosion resistance. Aluminum 6061 or 7075 is the better pick for light-load spacers, axles and prototypes where weight and cost matter more than wear resistance.

How do you control runout between bearing seats?

We finish both bearing journals in the same clamping on a turn-mill center, so they share one axis. Long parts are supported with a tailstock or steady rest. Runout is then checked on V-blocks with a dial indicator during first-article inspection and on every part when it is a critical callout.

How do I get a quote for turn-mill cnc aluminum and stainless steel shaft parts?

Send a 3D model (STEP or IGES) and a 2D drawing with tolerances, material, finish and quantity through the quote form or by email. An engineer replies within 24 hours on business days with price, lead time and any DFM suggestions.
