Sheet Metal Fabrication

Stamped, Bent and Welded Aluminum Sheet Metal Parts

These are aluminum sheet metal parts produced by a combination of laser cutting, stamping, press-brake bending and TIG welding, with stainless steel also available. Prototype quantities are laser cut, and higher volumes move to stamping dies for lower unit cost. Finished parts are anodized to color. They are for OEMs needing covers, frames, chassis and brackets that scale from sample to production.

Manufacturing

How we make this part

Process, material options and inspection for stamped, bent and welded aluminum sheet metal parts.

The route depends on quantity. For prototypes and small batches, parts are laser cut and bent with no dedicated tooling. When volumes justify it, we build progressive or single-stage stamping dies, which cut and form in one stroke and reduce piece price. Welded assemblies are TIG welded with fixtures to control distortion, and weld seams are ground or blended where they show.

Aluminum 5052 bends and welds well and is the default for formed and welded parts; 6061 is stronger but less forgiving in bending and loses some strength near welds. Anodizing after welding can reveal weld zones as slightly different shades, so cosmetic welded parts are often powder coated instead. Stainless steel is an alternative where strength or heat resistance matters.

Formed parts are checked with angle gauges, height gauges and check fixtures at first article, and welded assemblies for squareness and flatness. Critical dimensions receive 100% inspection. Weld quality is checked visually for penetration and porosity. Typical uses include battery trays, equipment covers, electronic chassis, display frames and machine guards.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When does stamping become cheaper than laser cutting?

Stamping needs a die, so it only pays off once volume spreads the tooling cost. The break-even depends on part size and complexity, often somewhere in the thousands of pieces. We can quote both routes so you can see the crossover for your part.

Why do anodized welded aluminum parts show weld marks?

Welding changes the alloy and grain structure in the weld zone, and that area anodizes to a slightly different shade. Filler alloy choice can reduce the effect but rarely eliminates it. For cosmetic welded parts, powder coating or painting hides the difference.

How do I get a quote for stamped, bent and welded aluminum sheet metal parts?

Send a 3D model (STEP or IGES) and a 2D drawing with tolerances, material, finish and quantity through the quote form or by email. An engineer replies within 24 hours on business days with price, lead time and any DFM suggestions.
