How we make this part
Process, material options and inspection for cnc milled aluminum alloy knurled control knobs.
We first turn the knob body, then mill features that a lathe cannot make, such as flat grip pads, pointer ridges, windows for LED light pipes or set-screw access holes. Knurl type is chosen by size: fine diamond knurls on small knobs, straight or coarse knurls on large ones. Every bore and skirt height is held consistent across the batch for a uniform look.
6061 aluminum balances strength, machinability and anodize quality; 6063 can give more even colors for cosmetic batches. Colored anodizing, bead blasting and brushing are the main finishes, and laser engraving adds scales. Aluminum knobs are about a third of the weight of brass ones, which suits lightweight panels and handheld equipment.
Bore size and skirt height are measured on each batch, color is compared to an approved sample, and knurl and edges are checked for burrs. Critical dimensions are inspected on every knob, and a first-article report is available before the batch starts. Typical uses include industrial control panels, test instruments, audio gear, lighting controllers and appliance front panels.

Can a knob include a window for an LED indicator?
Yes. We can mill a slot or hole in the knob for a light pipe or translucent insert, allowing an LED behind it to show position or status. The window size and position are designed to line up with your PCB layout.
Which knurl pattern should I choose?
Fine diamond knurls suit small knobs and precise adjustment. Straight knurls give a clean look and good grip in one direction. Coarse knurls suit large knobs or gloved operation. We can make samples with different knurls so you can compare grip.
